In Palo Alto
The Stanford campus, with its red-tiled roofs, palm trees and fountains, is quite a lovely place to walk around. Attractions include Memorial Church, an extensive collection of Rodin sculptures and Cantor Arts Center.
If you feel like going for a short, accessible hike, head to the hills just west of the Stanford campus, where a popular, paved 3.7 mile loop is accessible via two different entrances on Junipero Serra Boulevard.
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
This lab is home to a two-mile linear accelerator, the longest in the world. It was originally a particle physics research center, and is now a multipurpose laboratory for astrophysics, photon science, accelerator and particle physics research. Tours are offered at 1:30pm and 3:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month, which just happens to include Friday October 19. Advance registration is required, about one month in advance, on this website.
